The Peak District

We are having great difficulty deciding which part of England we like the best! We arrived in Buxton in The Peak District late yesterday after a beautiful drive through the countryside and lots of pretty roads. Our Hotel happened to be hosting two wedding parties and a 40th birthday so was very lively.

Our first stop of the day was Chatsworth House - home to the Duke of Devonshire and film set for many a movie, including 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Jane Eyre'. The house was started in the mid 1500s and was owned by the Earl of Devonshire. The fourth Earl was given the title of Duke as a reward for assisting King William in gaining the throne. He undertook a major refurbishment of the house in the 1680s with many of the plans carried out with a visit from the King in mind - he never visited. Mary Queen of Scots was also held at Chatsworth House a couple of times.

Our next visit was to Haddon Hall. We didn't learn much about the families or the history of the medieval house but it was very interesting to see the architecture and furnishings of the time.

After another beautiful drive into The Lake District we have arrived in Beatrix Potter country. The roads are narrow, lined with stone fences and we even had to cross Lake Windermere on the ferry!

  1. Did you see Jemima Paddle Duck while you were on the ferry? Take care on those narrow twisty country roads, never know when Mr McGregor might be chasing a littlt blue coated rabbit around! Lots of happy farmers around here at the moment with over 2 inches of rain along the Mighty Murray since Thursday, has been lovely. Sunny but windy today. Loving the photos. Cheers FOA
