Ok! Having blog trouble and totally lost all that I had put on when I tried to put photos in! So now I'm just going to dot point the highlights.
- Arrived safely in Rome and it's hot and sticky.
- The Pontifical Irish College (our accommodation) is very basic but in a good location.
- Twisted my ankle this morning and it's sore, bruised and swollen. Icing it!
- Visited the Basilica of St John Lateran - the Mother Church.
- An obelisk outside that is 2000-3000BC!
- In the building across the road there are the Holy Stairs. Gift from Helena, Constantine's mother, to the Church. Moved them to Rome from the palace of Pontius Pilate. Jesus would have walked up and down them on the day of his crucifixion. Now covered in wood as people were taking bits. You can only go up the stairs on your knees and the tradition is to say an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be on each step. I walked up the other stairs!
- Went to the Basilica of Maria Maggiore - Mary Major - which is the largest church in Rome dedicated to Mary.
- Then walked to the Colosseum and then back to Irish College.
- Tea out with the group tonight.
- Early start tomorrow - mass at Vatican is at 7.30am!!!
- Will make another attempt at photos when I get time.
- Goodnight!
