The Netherlands or Holland?

Today's quiz question: why is the country known as The Netherlands and Holland and they speak Dutch - not Hollandaise?

After a 6.00am start we contemplated the possible answers and came up with nothing. When we arrived in Utrecht (in Holland/The Netherlands) we couldn't find the answer either.

We visited The Museum Catharijnecovent which is in an old monastery. The team there have developed a project to teach students about religious feasts and their stories. The Religious Education in the schools we have visited is very different to our Catholic Schools as their society and culture is deemed to be very diverse. The display was very well done and would engage students on a basic level.

We then visited a Catholic primary school called de Achtban - the Rollercoaster in English. After searching and searching we couldn't find anything that demonstrated that it was a Catholic school. They did have an RE program that they spend 45 minutes a week teaching and the students visit the Church when they get to their last year at the school. No praying or anything too serious!!  That's what they told us!

On the way home we played windmill!!!

  1. Don't know why they speak Dutch but before Netherlands became known as that, in the 1700's there were 10 provinces two of which were north and south Holland. When the traders and sailors were asked where they were from as they travelled around the world they replied Holland and so the name stuck.Apparently the people of that country are happy for their country to be called either.
Thought I had better make a contribution to this blog or you would think nobody was reading it and wouldn't continue. Sounds like you are a bit busy on your study tour. Picked my ute up from Barry Dickson's yesterday and it looks all pristine again. The idiot who ran into the back of me told RACV I pulled out a side road in front of him. Looking forward to next instalment. Cheers FOA

  2. Hello Jo. Another contribution to let you know there is someone else enjoying your blog. I am still getting school emails so got the info through there. I didn't know who Adam Cohen was when I read your post about him - my aged brain didn't connect the surname. I have since heard him twice on two different ABC programs - one of the pleasures of retirement more uninterrupted radio listening. Apparently he has just released or is about to release a new album. I hope your ankle is getting better and your study is going well.
