Budapest is a very beautiful city! We have been pleasantly surprised by how easy it has been to work our way around. There's probably more English speakers here than in Munich and signs and info is all in English as well as Hungarian.
So... where have we been? What have we seen?
- The best apartment! In an art nouveau style building with a fancy door - very much like Spain's Gaudi - Google him!
- Bubbles - the laundromat
- While our washing was soaking in the bubbles we checked out the revolution taking place in the streets - Budapest Pride March. Police and riot squads everywhere.
- Found a great restaurant for tea just around the corner - goulash!
- Mass in Hungarian at St Stephen's Basilica. Not to worry - we had the readings in English on the phones.
- A looong walk to the Buda Castle on the other side of the river including a visit to the Budapest History Museum.
- A memorial on the banks of the Danube for those who were shot into the river in 1944-45. There is a line of brass shoes of all sizes and styles
- The best way to get to the castle? FURNICULAR!! Yes - sing it loud!!
- After a rest - it's very hot and steamy today - we had a spin on the Budapest Eye.
Do you think when people say something is gaudy they might be referring back to Gaudi? He had quite an imagination. We had apple crumble over the weekend, nearly strudle. Budapest sounds very interesting. Enjoy your trip to Prague tomorrow. Cheers FOA
ReplyDeleteAre people familiar with the "camino?" its a 600km walking track in spain that idiots walk the length of for fun - well..... We walked further than that yesterday - so today we're taking the bus - we're wondering if we're only seeing the rich people of budapest (we're living 100m or less from the US embassy and doing tourist things) - so today we might go hunting for poor people - i've got a cold - just sayin' - after looking at the poor people for a bit we think we might go on a dinner cruise on the Danube - just for balance - RIP Hodgey - RIP Cambden markets - now where will we buy crap when we get to London?
ReplyDeleteFound the little people!! Went on the underground tube station thingy like hobbits - got on soviet era (rattle the gold fillings out of your remaining teeth) train with filth and one fellow who was either dead or alive - hard to tell - and lots of people who unlike us have to work for a living - we are down to $30 of hungarian money to last until tomorrow - dont want to have to get more out - might have to live like the hobbits on the train instead of like tourists for a few hours - ooh - lucky weve already paid for the danube dinner cruise - hsving a lovely (balanced) time of things
