This morning we were up bright and early to head to the Vatican Museums! This is an amazing complex filled to the brim with paintings and sculptures and tapestries and maps and artefacts - not to mention the history and past residents of the building itself.
Despite having both visited before, we each discovered new things and really enjoyed our morning. Aside from the Sistine Chapel (which is always amazing!) we loved the Raphael section of the apartments - incredible artwork and so rich in detail and narrative...
And then to get out we had to navigate this...
But we survived and made it to Termini Station in time to catch our train to Firenze (Florence).
So far we really like Florence (we only arrived at 5pm), it's a lovely city and we're looking forward to exploring it more. Here's a little snapshot of what we've seen so far...
The view from the Ponte Vecchio which is lined by jewellery shops!
The Duomo.
looks like people being sucked into a giant airplane engine turbine.
ReplyDeleteI've been avoiding the "when I went there ..." stories because Girl Joel has been doing the good bits while my humble contribution has been blogging about my trip to Frankston (it's pretty if we each have our own unique place in the blog and nobody gets confused about who's talking) but I have to step out of character for a moment.
I WENT TO FIRENZE AND IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN FRANKSTON. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. I WENT THERE TWICE (Florence not Frankston) CANCELLED A TRAIN TRIP TO NAPOLI TO GO BACK TO FIRENZE. STAYED IN A 17TH CENTURY CONVENT TURNED INTO A B&B WITH FRESCOS AND MURALS (aren't they the same thing??)
Will stop yelling now but was just so excited to remember. Anyway, arived in Firenze at 10pm on the train with no place to stay. Was the nicest place to be homeless. Finally stumbled onto (into?)the convent for 17th century nuns who were all dead so there was room in the B&B for me. Stayed for days. Breakfast was crap but the place was nice.
Ponte Veccio was notable for the Cat Stevens tribute guy every night and the $8 gelati.
Feedback
The people playing at home have given you some very usable feedback (thanks for the pictures for the fridge).
Got any feedback for us? What's been your favourite piece of blogging from the people playing at home? What direction would you like us to go in next? Tony and Julia will be in full-on election mode before you get back. Want us to cover that for you so you don't miss anything???

Please Andrew, not the Julia & Tony dribble, not here where we are enjoying our European trip. Time enough for all that when the travellers arrive home. I too have been to Florence and loved it. Better than Frankston. Love reading "The Blog" when I arrive home from my walk at 7.30 every morning then checking in over the day for any comments. They were a bit scarce there for a while but seem to have picked up again. Yea! Cheers FOA
ReplyDeleteAunty Aunty Aunty, I don't want to talk about Tony and Julia either - I'm just trying to bait Jo and Collette into deigning to reply to something I've written before I get sad and have to look to Kerry Stevens and Winnie the Pooh for advice again who'll convince me I'm not loved by anybody and send me back to Frankston. Did I tell you they have good art in Frankston?
DeleteHi ladies, I will add my 2 bobs worth (yes, 2 consecutive days, I know, bit much)I have also been to Florence, we are a travelled bunch of bloggers!!I purchased my very swish red leather jacket at High Fashion Peruzzi S.P.A., hugh retail therapy shop with floors of leather coats, bags etc., if you are so inclined & have time, worth a visit, change from all the beautiful churchs. The Vatican Museum was an awesome place also, room after room of amazing artwork, floor to breath taking ceilings, came away from there with a sore neck from looking up, down & all around, just too splendid to take it all in!!
ReplyDeleteMeant to say yesterday Jo, that school is still rinning ship shape under Ange's guidance, she is doing a wonderful job in your abscence. I have been looking after Rosie the last 4 Wednesdays, while Emma filled in for Lindy, she was a delight to have, think I need to be a Nanna, will miss her company. Off to have a very plain ordinary cup of Ozzie tea, enjoy what Florence has to offer, CHEERS Jenni K :)

ReplyDeleteTeresa Pahl's father died yesterday. Was unexpected.
Teresa said it was a blessing. She seems to be going ok.
Funeral is Saturday 1.30pm.
Thank you for sharing your journey. I too have been silently following along. I have something else to think about as I tramp along the Grange Burn ( trying to keep the health professionals happy) . Jo I had to succumb and join Facebook to follow my daudhter's adventures in Bali - this is much more user friendly. I even managed th QR code
ReplyDeleteNew player in the house. Yay!! Welcome to the asylum!! Who are you?? How big's your fridge? Been to Florence? Well ... been to Frankston then? They have good art in Frankston. It's in the bus stops. That way everybody wins. How positively enlightend.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you enjoying more, the church crawl or the foody blog?
We'll be friends forever if you can get Jo and Collette to answer a question.
You can't write just once you know.
It's against the rules.
Now that you're here you have to stay.

Last thing I remember, I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "
