Today we went for another train ride - this time four and a half hours from Prague to Berlin! The trains are an amazing way to see the country side and marvel at the beautiful scenery.
On arrival in Berlin we were immediately impressed with the architecture. There were trains going everywhere - platforms way above our heads and underground all within a shopping centre! Didn't take long for the gypsies to find us though. We have learnt not to answer yes to the question 'Do you speak English?'
Seeing that we didn't arrive in Berlin until after 3pm we decided not to waste time once we got to our hotel and hot-footed it to find a HOHO bus! There were a plethora of companies to choose from - think we saw five different ones. We didn't get all the way round as the service finishes at 6pm - as the driver kept reminding us! Not to worry as our ticket is valid for 48 hours!!
There is so much construction going on in Berlin. It is also obvious that most of their buildings have been built following WWII. Every now and then there is an older set of buildings together but they either guarded their major landmarks well or have restored them excessively since the war.
On the HOHO and our walk back to our hotel we did manage to see a few landmarks.
The Brandenburg Gate - former city gate built 1788 - 1791 as a sign of peace. Severely damaged during WWII, isolated when the Wall went up and restored early 2000's
The Reichstag - home to the German Parliament
Charlottenburg Palace
We have a jam packed day planned for tomorrow to make the most of the day in Berlin! Stay tuned!!
