Day 2 Vienna

Weather has been absolutely beautiful today - a great day to be out and about in Vienna!

This morning we rubbed shoulders with the royals and visited Schloss Schönbrunn (Schonbrunn Palace) the summer residence of the Hapsburgs who ruled Austria for over 600 years until 1918.

Schloss Schönbrunn

We decided we could manage quite nicely with a move to this palace from this one...

...for the warmer months!

We did the Grand Tour of Schönbrunn and spent a couple of hours wandering the state and private rooms and the gardens. We attempted to put the Hapsburg family tree together but it was all a bit complicated - lots of children as they believed they served their country well by breeding profusely to continue the Hapsburg rule. The tour was very interesting and we could have spent a lot longer exploring the gardens (beautiful but not manicured to within an inch of their lives!)

On our return to the city centre we visited the famous Figlmüller's restaurant for the most famous schnitzel in Austria!! They're pretty proud of their schnitzels and their service to the people of the world! And rightly so? It was delicious, we ate the whole lot and we don't have a photo - sorry, we were hungry.

A wander through the streets following our late lunch scored us a few sights...

Interior of St Stephen's Cathedral (we showed you the exterior yesterday)
Another part of Hapsburg Palace - we had to trial another streudel near here just to see how it compared to yesterday. No photo of that either!

Art gallery

...and we found this!

This evening we have been back to Schönbrunn for the Konzerte in the Orangerie. We were entertained by the Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra as they performed Mozart and Strauss. An amazing experience!

Tomorrow, the big haul to Poland!

  1. Hi ladies, just back from cold, wet & very wintery Warrnambool, same in Hamilton also, vast contrast to the last couple of weeks of very warm Autumn weather!! I too have been to the Summer & Winter palaces, Summer one you would have to spend a couple of days to see all that it offers, an amazing palace, love your photos! If you get the chance for a coffee, visit Cafe Sacher, their Sacher Torte is to die for, sent all around the world apparently! My sister-in-law is just back from Poland, went to visit the rellies over there, will look forward to seeing your pictures of my in-laws homeland! Stay safe, your blog is very informative, funny & a fab view of what you're experiencing. CHEERS Jenni K :)

  2. I hope you booked a seat when you booked the train! I know that sounds stupid, but you have to do that over there. Or was it a sleeper? You going to Krakow? Have to go to the salt mine and Auschwitz. The salt mine is amazing and Auschwitz is, well it's hard to put into words exactly what Auschwitz is, but you have to go. We liked Poland, hope you do to. Take care. Freezing here, bazaar, 28degrees 3 days last week, 14degrees last 3 days! Did you visit Tiffany's again in Vienna? We still haven't seen what was in the last blue box!
