...with the sound of Austrian rain and the Sound of Music CD belting out of our tour van! Yes! We spent the afternoon enjoying an SOM tour in Salzburg. More of that later!
Due to a slight change of plans (technical error - certainly not ours) we had the chance to explore Salzburg which is a very pretty and interesting city, population of 150,000. There happened to be a 'Wind and Brass Festival' on for the day so lots of music and traditional dress around the Old Town.

Mozart Platz - Salzburg is the birthplace of Wolfgang, but apparently he couldn't wait to leave (the locals didn't tell us that!)
We happened across a monastery, St Peter's, which had a beautiful cemetery among its grounds. We found out later that the SOM escape scenes were filmed there (when the Von Trapps are hiding in the catacombs)!
So, our SOM tour was a short four hours but we saw heaps!
The mansion used for the scenes of the back of the Von Trapp home, actually belonged to the real Max! The lake was also used for the boat scene, where Maria and the kids fell in!

Besides a very good SOM fix we saw beautiful scenery and had a lovely day out. A two and a half hour train ride (no coach to ourselves this time) we have arrived in Vienna!

Song for the Day (going classy today) Viennese Sonatina (Mozart)
ReplyDeleteGo to the gardens and see if they have their festival on. They have food / wine stalls of all different nationalities each night and they have a huge screen where they show classical music. It's a real carnival atmosphere and it's on every night. You might be a bit early for it, but it's worth a look anyway. Say hi to Mozart for me!
